Halftoning Teddy!

Halftoning

Teddy is Mum – in – Law’s hyper active Poodle, a fun loving rascal that rips a newspaper to bits faster than an industrial shredder – it may be mischief or maybe he just doesn’t like the Daily Mail?

Anyway his cute face just needed capturing for posterity in some form.

The Halftoning process was relatively simple using some software called Halftoner by Jason Dorie. Load your chosen photo, adjust the spacing and orientation of the half toning dots and the software will generate the G Code for the CNC process.

The real challenge was to find the best material to work with and the right combination of cutter angle and depth. I tried sealed MDF, off cuts of laminate flooring before finally using engraving plastic – a black plastic but with a white core (from Lawrence Art Supplies). As for the cutter I went for a 60 degree V cut bit to give a good penetration in to the white core.
